BE ANNOUNCES THE BeBOX DUAL603-133
New system more than doubles performance of the original BeBox

MENLO PARK, Calif (August 5, 1996) - Accompanying its release of Developer Release 8 of the Be Operating System (BeOS(tm)), Be, Inc. introduced the new BeBox(tm) Dual603-133 personal computer. This new system integrates two RISC-based PowerPC 603e processors running at 133 MHz, providing more than twice the performance of the original BeBox (BeBox Dual603-66).

"Moving to the 133 MHz PowerPC is a very simple, logical move," said Jean-Louis Gassée, president and CEO of Be, Inc. "We're following the sweet spot in the PowerPC cost curve and delivering cost-effective multi-processor systems."

Because of the larger integrated cache of the 603e, the performance seen with these microprocessors is greater than simply the increase in the clock speed. In addition, due to the parallelism introduced by using multiple processors, the BeBox Dual603-133 is able to significantly outperform single processor systems using more expensive, higher clock speed processors.

The heart of the BeBox is the Be Operating System. Designed for cutting-edge real-time applications and power-hungry users, the BeOS sheds the backward compatibility baggage that inhibits the performance of older OS architectures. However, by recognizing and using industry standards for networking and data formats, Be doesn't force its developers and users to abandon the substance of their previous work.

The BeBox contains a wealth of built-in media and I/O hardware. Some of the hardware sets the standard for consumer expectations: An integrated CD-ROM drive, two MIDI ports, stereo audio ports, three infrared control ports, two joystick ports, as well as standard SCSI, parallel, and high-speed serial connectors. In addition, the BeBox sports a GeekPort(tm), a 37-pin connector that provides four additional channels of analog/digital conversion and up to 16 digital paths, thus satisfying the needs of new hardware designers, inventors, and weekend tinkerers.

The BeBox is highly expandable and customizable. With three PCI expansion card slots and five ISA card slots, the BeBox is open to a world of standard PC card options for graphics, video, Ethernet networking, and more. Internet TCP/IP capabilities, including World-Wide Web, e-mail, and file transfer are built-in.

A fully-configured BeBox Dual603-133 is priced at US$2,995; the non-configured customizable version is priced at $1,995. Be is accepting orders for the new computer, and expects to begin shipping in late September. The company will continue to offer the BeBox Dual603-66 ($2,195, $1,195), with immediate shipment.

Complete details of pricing and configurations can be found on Be's Internet Web site at http://www.be.com. Customers and developers can place orders for Be products through the web site.
