BE AND METROWERKS ANNOUNCE AGREEMENT
TO IMPLEMENT JAVA FOR THE BeOS
MENLO PARK, CA and AUSTIN, TX (August 5, 1996) - Be, Inc.
and Metrowerks, Inc. announced today that they will work
together to integrate support for Java(tm), the emerging
platform-independent language and environment, into the Be
Operating System (BeOS(tm)).
"With this agreement, we further cement the close working
relationship that we have had with Metrowerks," said
Jean-Louis Gassée, president and chief executive
officer of Be, Inc. "We have been delighted with the
response to CodeWarrior(r) for BeBox. With the incorporation
of Java support, the BeOS will become an even stronger
development and application delivery platform."
The BeOS is the heart of the BeBox(tm) computer system,
introduced late last year. The BeOS is a multithreaded, true
multitasking, symmetric multiprocessing system geared for
digital design applications and the Internet. It offers an
exciting alternative to the current evolutionary approach to
personal computing platforms. The BeOS provides a very
high-performance design, free from the baggage that older
operating systems must carry, and provides a robust, fast,
lightweight environment in which to run Java applications
and tools.
"We're excited to be working with Be on this
implementation," said Greg Galanos, President and CEO of
Metrowerks, Inc. "Our Java virtual machine, just-in-time
compiler, and development tools will be ported to the BeOS
and available in the CodeWarrior for BeBox products. We
expect the BeOS to provide excellent Java performance."
Metrowerks and Be plan to provide support for Java
development and execution on the BeOS in the next few
months.
Be and Metrowerks will collaborate on providing
value-added Java interoperability in the BeOS web browser.
Through the porting of the Java tools to the BeOS, Be
developers will gain access to both Java development tools
and VM technology for their own applications development
through the CodeWarrior for BeBox Software Development Kit.
