PURITY SOFTWARE ANNOUNCES CHARLOTTE PREVIEW RELEASE (Austin, TX - August 4th, 1997) Today, Purity Software, Inc. announced the first public release of Charlotte for the BeOS. Charlotte is a high-performance web server that truly demonstrates the power of the Be Operating System and is being shown today at the Be Developer's Conference and later this week at MacWorld Expo in Boston, MA. Those attending the MacWorld conference will be shown demos of the server in Purity's booth (Bayside Expo Center, #1600) and Be's booth (World Trade Center, #5119). Purity will be making available a free demonstration version of the Charlotte Preview Release to interested attendees. "With this first public release of Charlotte for the BeOS, web site administrators are given a taste of what Purity intends to offer on this exciting new platform.", said Nathan Nunn, President and CEO of Purity Software, "Unprecedented ease of use when managing multiple servers on a single machine coupled with exceptional raw serving power will create a strong web serving presence as well as promising opportunities for third-party web developers on Be's platform." Charlotte is a next-generation web server based on the HTTP/1.1 specification. Designed to take full advantage of the modern features of the BeOS, Charlotte can host multiple servers on one machine, providing the power and flexibility of traditional UNIX web serving and ease of management surpassing Macintosh web servers. The Charlotte Preview Release includes a fully featured and unrestricted copy of the BeOS, offering a complete web serving solution including the operating system needed to run the software.
CHARLOTTE FEATURES From day one, Charlotte has been designed with graceful multiple server support and administration in mind. The team of developers at Purity feel that many current web server implementations are showing their age with web developers demanding more extensive support for running many different servers on a single machine. Getting a server up and running with Charlotte is as simple as point and click thanks to an elegant graphical administration interface which may be used locally on the server machine or on a remote workstation. When the time comes to add another server, your existing servers continue to operate while you are configuring the new one. Live monitoring allows administrators a customized view of any of the available web sites served by Charlotte. To further energize the BeOS web serving market, Purity Software in conjunction with prominent BeOS developers has developed the Purity Open Web Server Application Programming Interface (POWSAPI) as a standard web server add-on architecture. POWSAPI offers unparalleled flexibility to third-party web developers to extend the built-in feature set of BeOS web servers. Other web server vendors planning to introduce products into the BeOS marketplace are encouraged to support the POWSAPI interface and will not be charged any licensing fees to do so. Developers interested in learning more about the POWSAPI architecture are invited to attend a short session led by Stephen Beaulieu, the author of Charlotte, at the Be Developer's Conference from 2:30 to 3:00 PM on Tuesday, August 5th.
