MENLO PARK, Calif (September 15, 1997) -- On September 2nd, Apple announced the purchase of Power Computing's Macintosh business. Despite this event, Be will honor the commitment made by Power Computing in November 1996 to provide a free copy of the BeOS to customers that purchased a Power Computing machine after November 26th, 1996. "We have had an excellent relationship with Power Computing," said Jean-Louis Gassée, president and CEO of Be, Inc. "Power Computing customers have been very supportive of the BeOS since the beginning and we are delighted to offer the BeOS to them." Be is setting up a web page for Power Computing customers to order a free copy of the current version BeOS directly from Be Incorporated. Customers will be asked to submit their mailing address, email address, date of purchase, and serial number of their Power Computing machine. Most Power Computing machines are supported by the BeOS. The order form will be available at http://www.be.com/users/power_computing.html the week of September 22nd. At that time customers can also call the toll-free number (800-491-2818) to order their copy. There may be customers who would like to purchase the BeOS with printed user documentation and free updates to the next two versions of the BeOS. This product costs $49.95 and may be purchased either on-line via the web site at http://www.be.com/purchase/ordering/beos_order_form.html or by calling the same toll free number listed above. Offering the BeOS to Power Computing customers is part of Be's overall plan to seed the market with the BeOS. Be is utilizing a variety of means to offer users the opportunity to try the BeOS. Hundreds of thousands of copies of the BeOS have been bundled with major computer magazines in the US, Canada, Japan, Germany, France, and the UK. The BeOS can also be ordered directly from Be's website. Later this fall the BeOS will be freely downloadable from the Internet.
