BeOS Masters Awards: August '97

Twenty-six Master honorees highlight some of the
best new software for the BeOS.

August 5, 1997, at the Boston Computer Museum, the winners of the second BeOS Masters Awards were announced, recognizing some of the newest, most innovative and useful software for the Be Operating System (BeOS). A total of nine developers were presented with BeOS Masters awards, and seventeen developers were noted with honorable mentions.

In addition, special awards were presented to two individuals. Jon Watte and Chris Herborth were recognized for their outstanding and persistant contributions to the Be developer community as a whole.

The BeOS Masters Awards are designed to encourage and recognize the individuals behind some of the best software being released for the BeOS. The BeOS Masters also represent a recognition of peers, as the selection panel is made up of some of the best engineers responsible for the core of the Be Operating System. This round of BeOS Masters honored early work done with the recently released BeOS Preview Release for PowerPC.

In a separate announcement at the Be Developer Conference, Be demonstrated BeOS for Intel publicly for the first time. The company announced that the next full upgrade for the BeOS will simultaneously release in Intel and PowerPC versions.

Be's success in tapping into the new and world-wide pool of programmers is reflected in the number of student and non-US developers winning awards. Of the twenty-eight awards presented, eight were students and thirteen were from outside the US. The momentum for BeOS applications continues, with nearly twice as many applications considered for August BeOS Masters Awards as were considered for the May competition.
