The BeOS Masters Awards are designed to highlight some of the best software developers for the Be Operating System (BeOS), both for innovation as well as for usefulness. Eleven BeOS Master Awards were awarded at the Be Developer Conference in Santa Clara in May, and an additional eight developers were noted with honorable mentions.

This round of BeOS Masters honored early work done with the BeOS version DR8 and before. At the conference, Be released to developers an advance access version of the BeOS Preview Release, the upcoming premire public release of the new operating system.

The awards were presented in several broad categories. The number of freeware and shareware honorees reflects the developer orientation of this round of the BeOS Masters, and the fact that software developed for this round was on prerelease versions of the BeOS. In addition, Be's commitment to encouraging new programmers is reflected in a number of student awards winners.

The BeOS Master Awards winners are being presented with UMAX S900 systems featuring dual PowerPC 604 processors. Honorable Mention winners were presented with Iomega Jaz drives. All BeOS Master participants will receive a BeOS Masters polo shirt available only to participants and Be company engineers.

The next BeOS Masters ceremony will take place on August 5, 1997 in Boston, the night before the opening of the MacWorld Expo and following the next two-day Be Developer Conference, August 4-5.
