Removing Replicants from the Desktop

So, you've installed the BeOS, and been impressed with our lightweight object embedding technology, Replicants. What could be cooler than dragging your web browser's window onto your Desktop, where you can see it all the time, including any updates that happen to the page you're viewing. It's sort of like getting PointCast for free with NetPositive.

It's cool, that is, until you want it to go away. You click on the Replicant window and hit the delete key, you drag it to the Trash. Grrrr, nothing works! How the heck do you delete Replicants from the Desktop, anyway?!?!!

It is actually simple, if a little less intuitive than it might be. Just follow these short steps:

  1. If you have not already, make sure Replicant controls are visible, by choosing "Show Replicants" from the Be menu. (If you see "Hide Replicants" instead, this means that Replicant controls are already visible, and you can skip this step.)

  2. Close or move any windows that are covering the control handle for the Replicant you want to remove. The control handle looks like a very tiny hand, sort of, and is in the bottom left corner of the Replicant's window.

  3. Click and hold on the Replicant's control handle with your secondary mouse button (or while holding down both the Control and Command keys on your keyboard if you have a single-button mouse).

    A context-sensitive menu should appear.

  4. Choose "Delete" from the menu.

Your Replicant's window will disappear, until the next time you need to put ESPN's SportsCenter page on your Desktop.
