Be Incorporated and M-Systems Collaborate to Provide Flash Disk Integration Within Internet Appliance Software Platform
Cooperation Enables Support of M-Systems' DiskOnChip Flash Disk as the Local Storage Device Within Be's BeIA
MENLO PARK & FREMONT, Calif. -- July 31, 2000 -- Be Incorporated (Nasdaq: BEOS), the platform innovator that enables
rich media and web experiences on Internet appliances, and M-Systems
Flash Disk Pioneers (Nasdaq:FLSH), a leader in flash disk data storage
products for the Internet appliance and network infrastructure
markets, today announced that BeIA, Be's software platform for
Internet appliances, will support M-Systems' DiskOnChip solid-state
flash disk storage technology.
Support for M-Systems' DiskOnChip flash disk storage system makes
BeIA an ideal software platform for the new class of Internet
appliances by enabling faster development of cost-effective devices
that offer a high level of reliability, functionality and performance.
Utilized as a flash-based disk for local storage, DiskOnChip enables
easy software version upgrades, which is critical for the Internet
appliance market where advances with protocols constantly occur. Other
advantages include improved security, modularity for easy capacity
upgrades, low power consumption, small size, and a quick
time-to-market.
``The addition of support for M-Systems' DiskOnChip technology
further enhances the performance of BeIA,'' said Lamar Potts, vice
president of sales and marketing at Be. ``This new feature makes BeIA
an ideal solution for Internet appliance developers looking for a
stable and reliable software platform that also reduces development
costs wherever possible.''
``Be and M-Systems are giving Internet appliance developers the
tools that they need to create the best solutions for their
customers,'' said Dana Gross, executive vice president, DiskOnChip at
M-Systems. ``By working with us and providing support for DiskOnChip
within BeIA, Be is able to give its customers an ideal operating
system for Internet appliances with the benefit of easy integration of
DiskOnChip, the flash disk of choice.''
Internet appliances currently in development are being built
without moving parts. Therefore, solid-state persistent storage for
the software platform is a necessity. DiskOnChip offers an extensive
range of modular data storage capacities, reliability, the speed of
solid-state flash memory components using TrueFFS (True Flash File
System) technology and easy, cost-effective integration into most
applications.
M-Systems and Be work directly with ODMs (Original Device
Manufactures) and OEMs (Original Equipment Manufactures) to provide
memory solutions and software platforms for Internet appliances,
respectively. The two companies will cooperate in promoting each
other's products to their customers.
