Be Incorporated and Arima Computer Corporation Join Forces to Develop Internet Appliances
Prominent Original Device Manufacturer to Build Devices Based on Be's BeIA

MENLO PARK -- August 9, 2000 -- Be Incorporated (Nasdaq: BEOS)today announced the signing of an agreement with Arima Computer Corporation, a leading Original Device Manufacturer (ODM) in Taiwan, to cooperate on the sales and marketing of a jointly developed set of complete Internet appliance solutions based on BeIA, Be's software platform for Internet appliances. These devices may be available to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and other companies as early as Q4 2000.

The complete hardware/software solutions offered by Be and Arima will benefit Internet appliance distributors by reducing development costs, increasing hardware options and speeding time to market. Distributors will be free to customize the user interface and branding of the devices.

``Teaming with Arima to develop Internet appliances is an important step for Be because it furthers our goal to have BeIA-based devices in consumers' hands as soon as possible,'' said Jean-Louis Gassée, chairman and chief executive officer of Be. ``Arima's expertise in hardware development, combined with the unrivaled capabilities of BeIA, will ensure the availability of superior Internet appliance options for both distributors and consumers.''

``The joint effort between Be and Arima ensures that our new devices are optimized to run BeIA,'' stated L.C. Tsai, chief technical officer of Arima. ``BeIA is the ideal operating system to power Arima's Internet appliances because of its stability and incomparable Internet and media handling capabilities, all of which are crucial requirements for this new class of devices.''
