Be Inc. and Music Browser Inc. Team to Offer Retailers Unique Broadband Music Listening Stations
Pilot program launched at Tower Records, New York
CES, LAS VEGAS -- Jan. 8, 2001 -- Be Incorporated (Nasdaq: BEOS) and Music Browser Inc.
today announced Music Republic(TM), an innovative broadband digital music delivery system for
retail environments, powered by BeIA, Be's complete solution for Internet appliances and
dedicated devices. A pilot installation of 14 Music Republic stations was launched in September
2000 at Tower Records, Lincoln Center in New York City.
Music Republic allows consumers to quickly browse through, select and listen to thousands of
complete music tracks. The device uses a proprietary, patent-pending, music-relation system to
recommend albums that are related to user-selected titles. Additionally, Music Republic delivers
targeted advertising to music buyers -- artists, albums, concerts and merchandise are all directly
linked and promoted to the consumer.
Stores will be networked with between 25 and 75 strategically located stations. Each station
operates independently and tracks user selections, allowing retailers to gather valuable usage
statistics.
"This is the only product of its kind currently on the market," said Lamar Potts, vice president of
sales and marketing at Be. "Music Republic is a maintenance-free system and can be operated by
customers with virtually no instructions. It offers consumers a wealth of information and music
tracks from their favorite artists, and provides retailers with an effective cross-selling
promotional tool."
"Using BeIA as the core technology solution for Music Republic, we were able to develop a
music-delivery system for retail environments that has a user-friendly interface, lightening-fast
response, and is extremely stable," said Yaz Shehab, chief executive officer of Music Browser
Inc. "The Music Republic station takes up less store space and provides thousands more CD
selections than traditional listening stations."
Availability and Pricing
A national rollout of Music Republic is planned for Q1 2001. Pricing is based upon a monthly
subscription service and is determined by the number of stations per store.
