BeOS to be the Operating Software on Microworkz New Line of Information Access Devices

NEW YORK, NY, June 22, 1999 - Be Incorporated, developer of BeOS®, an operating system designed for digital media applications on desktop computers and Internet appliances, today announced it has signed an agreement with Microworkz Computer Corporation of Seattle, Washington, to provide a line of Internet appliances. These devices will be shipped with BeOS pre-installed.

Microworkz will take advantage of the digital media-handling features of BeOS to create non-PC devices that will be marketed primarily for access to the Internet, and performing other functions such as email, eCommerce, word processing or playing games. An Internet appliance will be a first-time purchase for many consumers who do not own a personal computer, but want to access the Internet. Because of the very low price, it will also be a second or third device within a household that already has a personal computer.

"We feel that our operating system, due to its modularity, is ideally suited for Microworkz' consumer-oriented hardware," says Lamar Potts, vice president of Internet Appliances at Be Incorporate. "BeOS was built as an Internet-native system with core operating system services that specifically handle digital media in a way that's ideal for Internet appliances. Microworkz has created a line of affordable Internet-access devices for the home, and BeOS is the right choice for an operating system on these devices," adds Mr. Potts.

"As we move forward to the next level of information access devices, Microworkz is proud to have found the stability and functions it needed in the BeOS." says Rick Latman, CEO, Microworkz. "The combination of Be's straightforward development environment and the fact that we can use readily available industry components allows us to offer these Information appliances at attractive consumer price-points," Mr. Latman adds.
