Be Incorporated Highlights BeOS-based Internet Appliance
BeOS Internet Appliance Displayed at Intel Developer Forum
MENLO PARK, Calif., August 31, 1999 - Be Incorporated (Nasdaq:
BEOS), developer of BeOS®, the operating system designed for digital
media applications and Internet appliances, today announced that it has
expanded development of BeOS to meet the market requirements for a wider
range of Internet appliances and embedded products. Be, Inc. will
demonstrate an Internet appliance powered by BeOS at the Intel Developer
Forum August 31 - September 2, 1999 in Palm Springs, Calif. BeOS provides a
unique bridge between fully featured desktop implementations for creating
digital content and playing back digital content over Internet appliances
and other embedded products.
Be, Inc. will demonstrate a kitchen environment Internet appliance
running on BeOS. BeOS is well suited for Internet appliance which are
consumer devices requiring instant on, immediate response, and real time
audio and video streaming.
"We are very excited about presenting our concept design for an Internet
appliance that brings useful functionality into a kitchen environment,"
said Lamar Potts, vice president, Internet appliances and embedded products
at Be, Inc. "Our Internet appliance will really show off a customized user
interface and the digital media capabilities of the BeOS architecture.
BeOS' modular design is ideally suited for the Internet appliances market.
The coming months promise to be exciting for both Be and consumers as this
new class of devices come to market."
Currently, BeOS is pre-installed on Microworkz' iToaster, a new line of
Information Access Devices that enable Microworkz to take full advantage of
the digital media-handling features of BeOS to create non-PC devices that
are marketed primarily for access to the Internet. Other functions include
email, e-commerce, word processing or playing games. BeOS on iToaster
provides simple consumer Web access through a customizable interface. BeOS
is capable of providing audio and video streaming, allows low cost
development and deployment, and will be e-commerce and
broadband-enabled.
BeOS' extensive capabilities are designed to interface with an NTSC or
PAL television, and a range of VGA and flat panel monitors. Provisions have
been made for optional broadband access via ISDN, cable modem or xDSL.
Furthermore, a high-speed, fully wireless option allows total flexibility
for wireless applications. The Internet appliance and embedded products
operating system will allow the convergence of telephony and data networks
where voice, video and data unite in a single, multi-service network.
