SSC and Be Launch Be Magazine
Creators of Linux Journal to Launch First Newsstand Publication Focused on
Software Platform for Personal Computers and Internet Appliances
SEATTLE and MENLO PARK, Calif. -- Dec. 13, 1999 -- Specialized Systems Consultants, Inc. (SSC) and Be, Incorporated (Nasdaq:BEOS) today announced the launch of Be Magazine, a new print publication devoted to Be and its software platforms, including the Be Operating System (BeOS). Be Magazine will launch as a bi-monthly publication with an initial circulation of 30,000 copies, and will be distributed to subscribers, newsstands and bookstores around the world. The premiere issue of Be Magazine will arrive on newsstands in March of 2000.
Be's software platforms enable rich media and web experiences on personal
computers and Internet appliances. For personal computers, Be offers BeOS,
an alternative operating system that provides a high-performance and robust
platform for all applications, excelling in the areas of audio and video
manipulation. For Internet appliances, Be offers Stinger, a compelling
software solution designed for the creation of appliances that deliver
information and entertainment over the web.
Scot Hacker, author of The BeOS Bible, has been named editor of Be
Magazine. An authority on the Be operating system for over four years,
Hacker has witnessed the tremendous growth of the Be platform. ``BeOS
applications are appearing in major computer stores, the user base is
expanding, and the operating system is supporting more and more key
technologies,'' said Mr. Hacker.
Scot Hacker is a freelance journalist, maintainer of The BeOS Tip Server
and author of The BeOS Bible -- the definitive guide to using BeOS. Mr.
Hacker's byline has appeared in publications including Byte.com, PC
Magazine, Windows Sources, ZDNet, Tripod, Cadence Journal of Jazz and Blues
and the Utne Reader.
``Just as readers have not had a single magazine they could turn to for Be
Operating System information, advertisers have not had a targeted venue for
promoting their Be-specific products,'' said Phil Hughes, president of SSC
and publisher of Be Magazine. ``This new print magazine will offer a forum
for both sides to meet, discuss and learn about this innovative and
influential marketplace.''
``SSC pioneered the publishing arena for Linux with Linux Journal and is
now bringing this same level of expertise to the Be market with Be
Magazine, the first print publication exclusively focused on Be's software
platforms,'' said Jean-Louis Gasseé, chairman and chief executive officer
of Be. ``The new magazine will offer readers a comprehensive inside look at
the technologic and industry innovations enabled by the Be Operating System.''
