What's New

Welcome to the first issue of the BeOS User Newsletter, an every-other-week newsletter dedicated to you, the user of BeOS 5 Personal Edition. You're getting this newsletter because not only did you download BeOS 5 Personal Edition (nice job!), but you registered. (Mmmmm. Even better.) We promise ("promise" not being a legally binding term) that this newsletter will always be full of tips, tricks and other semi-amusing things to get you even more familiar with BeOS 5 and to help you while away those pesky hours at your place of employment. And away we go....

The Hidden Question

Oh, and by the way, as part of our crusade to keep you amused, knowledgeable and clothed, we will have a contest in each newsletter, called The Hidden Question. It's pretty much what it sounds like: Somewhere in the newsletter there will be a hidden trivia question. If you've registered your copy of BeOS 5, send an e-mail to hidden@be.com with the correct answer and you will be entered into a drawing to win some nifty BeOS swag. PLUS your name will be announced in the next newsletter as one of the Big Winners. Joy. Can life be any more fulfilling than that? So start looking -- the contest starts... now!

New Download Manager

To get started, I'm going to assume you have BeOS 5 Personal Edition installed and it's all fuzzy and warm on your computer. Good. Now let's talk about what you can do with it. Some of you may have used BeOS before in its previous incarnations, some of you may be first -timers -- no matter, because this is the latest version and there's new stuff to be had.

For those of you who don't know, NetPositive in BeOS 5 Personal Edition has a brand new download manager. This download manager allows you to keep a running tab of stuff you come across that you'd like to download, but you don't have to download them THAT MINUTE (you can download them all at once at a later time when you're not using your precious bandwidth), thus saving you scads of time. Here's how it works:

1. Click whatever it is you want to download, thus starting the downloading process.

2. When the download window pops up, showing you the file it's beginning to download, you don't have to wait for it. Instead, go under "Download" and select "Stop All" (or click the disk icon to the right of the item you're downloading). The download will stop (but really, pause) downloading.

3. Go back to surfing around OR pick something else you want to download and repeat steps 1 & 2.

4. Who is the author of "The BeOS Bible"?

5. Repeat as needed. Then surf, write, design... do whatever you please. The downloads will wait for you. They're good little downloads.

6. When you are ready (say, right before you turn in for the night), go back to the Download window. Click "Download" and select "Retry Stopped." All your files will begin -- again -- to download in their own sweet time, and you can curl up in bed to watch that "Married With Children" rerun while you doze off. (If you happen to stay at your computer, watch how the downloads can run all at the same time on your screen. Ah, the beauty of pervasive multitasking on BeOS. Sigh.)

Okay! You are now in downloading bliss. You're welcome.

Horoscopes

ARIES (March 21 - April 19): The planets are aligning to begin distribution of beneficial doses of wisdom, financial security and opportunity. It is up to you to take advantage of this. I like your shirt.

TAURUS (April 20 - May 20): The opportunity you've been waiting for is right around the corner, along with a refreshing beverage.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 21): Contrary to popular belief, what is good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander. Ease up on the gas.

CANCER (June 22 - July 22): Finding true love means letting go of many of your fears. Don't look now, but there's a HUGE rattler behind you.

LEO (July 23 - Aug 22): For the time being, you're going to have to learn to live with indecision. More information is needed. While you're waiting on all of that, get those dishes done.

VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sept 22): Given the circumstances of your current situation, it may behoove you to clarify the intentions of previous discussions wherein confusion may have taken hold and muddied the meanings of certain declarations for which a particular person couldn't have foreseen the impending implications of said talk. Oh, you know what I'm talking about.

LIBRA (Sept 23 - Oct 23): Your social life could use a jump-start, and now is the time to do it. Get gussied up, apply that lipstick and splash out! Don't forget your keys.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 - Nov 21): Would you get a load of that guy? The nerve of some people.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21): Declarations of intent are a wise and healthy exercise for you to undertake. A few stomach crunches wouldn't hurt either, if you catch my drift.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19): Thank you for your order. Your shipment should arrive in 6 - 8 weeks.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18): Taking care of yourself is of the utmost importance right now. Grooming, however, should really take place indoors. Just a gentle suggestion.

PISCES (Feb 19 - Mar 20): It is easy to be hard on yourself for things that are out of your control. Easy as pie. How I love pie.
