What's New

It's time to play! Hicom Entertainment brings us Corum III, a computer roleplaying game in the style of Japanese Anime films. You play the young wandering knight Kaien Baist in a realm of chaotic magic and wonder. Next Generation Entertainment is proud to bring this exciting game of magic and adventure to BeOS users worldwide.

Eight Dark Lords wish to wield ultimate power over the land, but to achieve their ends, they require the power of the ninth Dark Lord. They send three Crayn magicians to seek the power of this lost Dark Lord, not realizing that the Crayn are themselves ambitious, and less than loyal to their masters. How do you fit in to these world-shaking events? Journey forth, and learn....

The Hidden Question

I thought I was so clever hiding last week's hidden question in the horoscopes:

"CANCER (June 22 - July 22): Something pretty unsettling is likely to happen today, but it won't actually do you any harm as long as you stay cool and don't overreact. Okay, it is a swarm of bees, but I'm pretty sure they're just Carpenter bees. What's the scientific term for those things anyway?"

But much to my chagrin, many of you seem to read the horoscopes, so you caught it. Which means a) you really enjoy the stunning insight into your spiritual life that the horoscopes provide, b) you muster through the lousy jokes each time, hoping for something funny or c) you muster through everything in the newsletter because dag nabbit, you really want to win a Be T-shirt.

At any rate, 22 of you answered correctly (the answer was Xylocopa), and here are the five that were picked randomly to win spiffy Be T-shirts:

Noby Nobriga, Mississippi
Shannon Cochran, California
Ivan Troubleijn, Belgium
Zane Lyons, Florida
Andrew Gaskill, California

The Hidden Question Rules: Somewhere in the newsletter there will be a hidden trivia question. If you've registered your copy of BeOS 5, send an e-mail to hidden@be.com with the correct answer (and your name and address, please -- don't worry, I promise you won't get stalked) and you will be entered into a drawing to win some nifty BeOS swag. PLUS your name will be announced in the next newsletter as one of the Big Winners.

That is all.

Understanding Workspaces

When you first start working with the BeOS, you have one workspace: a desktop and a set of windows that open on it, which you arrange to suit your projects. But if you're working on a lot of different things at once, your desktop can get very crowded and confusing to look at and work with. The good news is....

The BeOS supports up to nine virtual monitors (or panes) via the Workspaces application. Each pane in the Workspaces window represents a workspace, with a miniature version of each window open in that workspace. To start, all Workspaces except your first one are the same, because you haven't customized them yet. But each pane can have a different resolution, frequency, bit depth, and color background. Applications can even be running in different workspaces.

An example of the usefulness of Workspaces is in a graphics application where you want to see how a graphic looks in both 8 bits and 32 bits. Just move the graphic between a 32-bit workspace and an 8-bit workspace to see it in the different environments.

To customize your workspaces, use the Screen preference panel with Workspaces to give several workspaces a different resolution, bit depth, and a unique desktop color so you can tell them apart at a glance. Use the Backgrounds preference panel to give each workspace a custom background image.

To switch to another Workspace, you can:
1) Go to the Be menu, click Preferences and find Workspaces. Click in a pane to switch to that workspace.
2) Hold down the Alt key while pressing the function key that corresponds to that workspace (counting from left to right, top to bottom in the Workspaces window): Alt+F1 to switch to the first workspace, Alt+F2 to switch to the second, and so on. The workspace you're currently working in is called the active workspace.
3) You can toggle between two Workspaces by pressing Alt ~ (that's a tilde). This is more useful after you have set up Workspaces and are actively using them.

There are several ways to work with applications in different workspaces:

  • You can enter a workspace and launch the application.
  • You can transport an application window into another pane by click and holding the titlebar while using a key combination to switch to the desired workspce.
  • You can also drag one document or application window into another workspace via the Workspaces. (As seen in 1, above, you launch this Workspace management utility via the Be menu under Preferences. Wait, shouldn't that be under Applications instead? Probably. Why isn't it? I'm sorry, that information is classified.)
The Tracker keeps track of all applications running no matter which workspace they are in. If you select an application in another workspace via the Tracker, you go to that new workspace. When you reboot, a Tracker window will appear in the workspace where it was before you shut down or restarted your computer.

It's all very cool -- give it a whirl!

Check it Out

Read an interview with former Be engineer Doug Wright, who is now working at BIAS, single-handedly porting Peak, a popular, feature-packed, almighty, yet easy-to-use 2-track digital audio editing program. Good stuff.

Horoscopes

ARIES (March 21 - April 19): You know you are right about something that most other people say is wrong. So do you keep quiet or make an issue of it? I think we all know the answer to that question. Tantrum time!

TAURUS (April 20 - May 20): If your sixth sense tells you someone is not to be trusted, give that person a very wide berth. If that person's name is Wide Bertha, give her six cents.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 21): Anyone who says you are too conservative should see you now, as you do something completely unexpected. Doing something shocking will do your reputation a powerful lot of good. Bring a second pair of pants. When it happens, you'll know why.

CANCER (June 22 - July 22): You will have to make some sort of detour today, and it's unlikely you will end up where you intended to go. It won't bother you very much, but your traveling companions may not be amused. Tell them in a really snotty tone that next time they can drive themselves.

LEO (July 23 - Aug 22): Don't worry about how much a new scheme or project is going to cost. If your plan is a good one -- and according to the planets, it is -- fate will provide. Fate makes one heck of a tuna casserole, by the way.

VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sept 22): This is an important time of the year for you as the sun and Mercury, your ruler, move into your birth sign together. If you make a wish today, it will in some way come true in the next 12 months. So what are you waiting for? Sign up for that interpretive dance course!

LIBRA (Sept 23 - Oct 23): Why should you be afraid of something just because it's new? You should be afraid of it because it's going to ruin your entire life, leave you penniless and homeless, and make you realize that no one ever really loved you.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 - Nov 21): Focus on your dreams and wishes, and don't worry if they seem too fanciful to ever come true. In the next few days, you will find practical ways to turn your wishes into realities. You will also find practical ways to turn those old toilet paper rolls into a gorgeous chandelier!

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21): Don't just take someone's word for it that he knows what he's doing. Ask him where he's going, and if he gets snotty and tells you to drive yourself next time, give him a good, solid wallop.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19): It's time to come to grips with a family problem that has been causing you grief. As you know, your family is the problem.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18): There is an air of mystery about you today, and people can't figure out what you are up to. Chances are, you are not up to anything, but make it look as if you have a secret. It makes you seem more interesting. And let me tell you, you need all the help you can get.

PISCES (Feb 19 - Mar 20): You can blame someone else if something does not go right today, but wouldn't it be more honest to look at your own performance first? Hmm... but then again, it really IS easier to blame someone else.
