The Hidden Question
The last hidden question was, "In Mauritania, 1 ougiya equals how many khums?" The answer is 5 khums. About 40 people answered correctly, and here are the fabulous five who won stylin' Be T-shirts:
Markus Tschabold -- Switzerland
Bill Kladis -- Illinois
Steve Kirtley -- Kentucky
Angelo Dipierro -- Italy
Edmund Mendez -- California
The Hidden Question Rules: Somewhere in the newsletter there will be a hidden
trivia question. If you've registered your copy of BeOS 5, send an e-mail to
hidden@be.com with the correct answer (and your name and address, please) and
you will be entered into a drawing to win some nifty BeOS swag. PLUS your
name will be announced in the next newsletter as one of the Big Winners.
That is all.
Lookin' Good!
Getting tired of that stale background you've got on your desktop? What is it, bright blue? Boring!
How about a photograph of your gorgeous cat? Or your adorable kid? Or you on your latest
vacation? Let's do it!
Just click the BeOS menu. Then choose "Preferences." Scroll to "Backgrounds." Next to Image
it'll say "None." Click on "None" and you'll see your options. It's "None" or "Other." If you want a
picture on your desktop, you'll want to choose "Other." That's when it'll ask you where the file is
you want it to access. Now, if you have no image you want, you'll have to go get one. You can
get anything you want to off the web, of course, or you can use any .jpg that you already have.
If you're like me, you've probably been e-mailed a picture of someone's baby in the last three
months. Make sure you've saved it somewhere on your computer so you can use it.
Now find the folder that your image is in. Double-click whatever image you want, and you should
see it appear in the Preview window. Now, you can move it manually (choose "Manual" in
Placement), center it, scale to fit the screen, or make a tile (all options are under Placement).
When you're ready, click "Apply" and your picture is on your desktop!
If you have no image or are not interested in anything other than a nice, solid color, you can play
with that, too, by choosing "None" under Image and using the color bar in the menu window and
moving the circles in the color bar to create different colors (which will appear in the Preview
window). Also notice at the top of the menu window you can apply the background to just the
Current Workspace or All Workspaces. This means you could actually have a different
background for each workspace, which would be pretty stylin'.
Extra Bonus Tip: I didn't even know this until my copyeditor told me -- you can actually do all of
the above by just right-clicking the desktop and going to Add-Ons, then Background. Smoove!

BeGroovy has debuted a new feature: "The 'Any' Key"
comic strip, a cartoon which parodies
Be, Inc., and BeOS users (that's you!). Created by Robert Gering, "The 'Any' Key" is about the
lives of several characters working for Cosmo, Inc., home of the leading alternative operating
system CosmOS. The cast includes Don, 35, a kernel and file system engineer who originally
helped to develop Mango OS 2.0 and the Mango file system, but who "tired of the politics and
pressure and decided to go out and create an OS the way he thought it should be done." "The
'Any' Key" appears on BeGroovy every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and is supported
through the purchase of "The 'Any' Key" merchandise, including t-shirts, mugs, and mousepads.
Horoscopes
ARIES (March 21 - April 19): There is no point trying to meet others halfway today because with Venus and Mars, the relationship planets, at right angles to one another, if you give an inch, they will take a mile. Look out for your own needs today. Those Martians sure won't. Little green bastards.
TAURUS (April 20 - May 20): One of the most meaningful times of the year begins for you today as the sun moves into the area of your chart that governs home and family. Whatever your other duties, your main responsibility now is to those who love you the most. Now you just have to figure out who the heck that is.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 21): You will say something that causes an uproar this weekend, especially among those who, unlike you, believe some things should never be mentioned. But if there is one thing you hate, it's self-censorship, so go ahead: Rock the boat and enjoy the commotion. After all, it's not YOUR grandmother's birthday party.
CANCER (June 22 - July 22): It is fruitless to worry about something if you cannot do anything about it. Keep that thought in mind this weekend when dealing with situations where your power to affect the outcome is limited. No matter how big you are, there is always someone bigger, better connected and more pigheaded. Nice try, though!
LEO (July 23 - Aug 22): This is a good day for getting out and about. Your optimistic nature will attract the right sort of people at just the right time. Doors will open just when you need them to. Your progress will be smooth and easy wherever you go and whatever you do. There will be a public restroom right when you need one. Your french fries will be just the right amount of crispy. You get the idea.
VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sept 22): Don't worry too much about little things this week. Think big and let others take care of the details. As Venus, planet of harmony, moves into the work and well-being sector of your chart, ease up a little and don't push yourself so hard, except maybe on Thursday, when Mars and Jupiter join forces and make superhuman efforts possible. That's when you don your golden cape and save the nebula!
LIBRA (Sept 23 - Oct 23): Whoa, whoa, whoa! Take it down a notch, will ya?
SCORPIO (Oct 24 - Nov 21): You will be unusually assertive today. You know what you want, you know where to get it and if anyone stands in your way, well, he won't for long. But try to be a bit more sensitive when dealing with those you love and live with. Save the tough stuff for strangers. That way the ensuing fistfight won't be filed under "domestic violence." You don't need another one of those.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21): With Mars, your ruler, aspecting Jupiter, planet of confidence and enthusiasm, you will want to get things done this week. However, other aspects indicate you will make a better impression, especially at work, if you don't push too hard and make what you are doing look simple. If you work up a sweat, important people might think you are struggling. It wouldn't hurt to drum up a few crocodile tears, either. Maybe a quivering lip.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19): If you find yourself under pressure today, you probably have brought it on yourself. According to the planets, you have taken on too many responsibilities, at home and at work, and now you are starting to pay the price. Be smart and cut back on your commitments. I'd start by getting rid of at least one kid.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18): If there is something you want to do today that you find terribly exciting, don't be surprised if no one wants to join you in your great adventure. It's not a snub or an insult. It's just the way people are. Not everyone is as adventurous as you. Oh, and you smell.
PISCES (Feb 19 - Mar 20): You seem to be looking over your shoulder a lot lately. Have you done something wrong? Have you offended someone who might come looking for you? Whatever the reason, your paranoia will reach a peak in the next 24 hours. After that, you'll realize what a fool you've been. The danger was totally right there in front of you. Of course, by the time you figure THAT out, it'll be way too late.
