Crazy for Lovin' You
What's New
Good news, everyone! You can now buy both T-rackS and Corum III, two great
BeOS apps, at new low prices. T-rackS, the amazing analog-simulating audio
mastering software, now has their BeOS version on sale for $199 -- that's $100 less
than its original $299 price tag. Gobe's
Corum III originally sold for $49.95, but is now
available for $29.95; it's a great game, so if you don't already have it, now's the time
to get it.
The Hidden Question
The last hidden question was, "In the first successful test of a new method of dealing with weakened veins, doctors at the Toledo Hospital's Jobst Vascular Center in the United States recently performed a new procedure that replaced a weakened vein valve in a man's right leg with the jugular vein of what animal?" Many of you believed it was a pig, and one person guessed the Chupacabra. But the correct answer is a cow. About 30 people answered correctly, and here are the fortunate five who won glamorous yet durable Be T-shirts:
David Hale -- Texas
David Fanning -- Canada
Andrew T. Green -- Washington State
Emil Loer -- The Netherlands
Philip Cargile -- Virginia
The Hidden Question Rules: Somewhere in the newsletter there will be a hidden
trivia question. If you've registered your copy of BeOS 5, send an e-mail to
hidden@be.com with the correct answer (and your name and address, please) and
you will be entered into a drawing to win some nifty BeOS swag. PLUS your
name will be announced in the next newsletter as one of the Big Winners.
That is all.
Change Your Icons
Lo and behold, there are a kazillion (okay, maybe around 5,000) cool icons ported to
BeOS format that you can download and use. You can find them at
Miami Bug, where you can also download their IconChomper utility
to convert your own icons over, if you wanna.
Once you've gotten some neato icons (I highly recommend the Springfield Simpsons
icons myself), it's time to bring them over to your computer. To change an icon,
you can either drag and drop or copy and paste from one icon well to another. What's
an icon well? Good question.
Right-click any file. Go to Add-ons, then FileType. A box should pop up that says,
among other things, "File Type" and "Preferred Application," plus the buttons "Select"
and "Same As." In the upper right-hand corner of the box is a little square which will
have the icon for a folder, text file, etc. -- if it's a generic file, this square will be empty.
That square is your icon well.
Now go to an icon of your choosing and do the same thing: Right-click, Add-Ons,
FileType. That icon well will have your chosen icon in it. Simply copy and paste from
one to the other or, even easier, drag and drop. When you go to close it, click "Save"
and you're done.
Where this can get tricky is when a filetype is directly associated with an application.
For example, if you try to change the icon for all plain text files, you'll find that it
doesn't work. This is because text/plain is probably associated with StyledEdit or Pe
or Eddie, etc. In that case, open the FileType add-on for that text editor, navigate
through the list of the filetypes it handles, and select the one you want to change. You
can then drag and drop into that icon well.
To get really fancy and edit icons, double-click any icon well to access Icon-o-Matic,
where you can touch up the existing icon, paste in existing icons, or create new icons
from scratch.
I, however, kept it simple and just used Homer wearing 3-D glasses (one blue lens,
one red lens) for my Be folder. Ah.
Check it Out
After three and a half months of silence (for reasons we can now read about),
BeUnited.org has just posted an update on thier
website. On Wednesday, March 7,
2001, space officials set March 20, 2001 as the date for dumping this space station
into the Pacific Ocean. BeUnited is a non-profit organization which aims to find and
support teams of BeOS developers for the development of high quality software. For
you developer-types, this is a great resource.
Horoscopes
ARIES (March 21 - April 19): Something that made no sense at all just a few days ago will make perfect sense this weekend. The thing itself has not changed, but the way in which you look at it has. It would have made sense earlier, of course, had you not been so determined to stay sober all week.
TAURUS (April 20 - May 20): Because the sun is transiting the most sensitive area of your chart, you tend to believe that everyone is against you. Deep down, you know that isn't true, so stop feeling sorry for yourself and look on the bright side. Only your RELATIVES are against you.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 21): If your reputation is important to you, be careful what you agree to. Because there is a full moon in the career sector of your chart, you could easily find yourself doing something that may seem sensible now, but leads to all sorts of complications later on. Remember that time with the binding machine?
CANCER (June 22 - July 22): There is no point feeling sorry for yourself, no matter how many things seem to be going wrong in your life. If there are aspects of your existence that you really don't like, then do something positive to change them. Self-pity won't do anything -- well, except maybe attract the attention of a swimsuit model. They LOVE self-pity. Those nutty swimsuit models.
LEO (July 23 - Aug 22): You need to give loved ones a bit more freedom. It's not enough just to say that you trust them; you've got to show it; too. Look at it this way: The more you try to control other people, the more you encourage them to break away. Loosen your grip, and they'll be less likely to stray. Besides, I'm pretty sure it's illegal to use those invisible fences with humans.
VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sept 22): Because the full moon occurs in your birth sign, you may be a little more emotional than usual -- make that a lot, if you've been having relationship problems lately. Geez, will you quit blubbering already?
LIBRA (Sept 23 - Oct 23): What others say is right or wrong is less important than what your own instincts tell you. However, as the moon is nearly full, you cannot trust your instincts entirely, so it might be best not to make a decision for the next 48 hours, especially if there are frozen body parts at stake.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 - Nov 21): You will have to take on new responsibilities this week, and although in one way that might be a nuisance, in another way it is just what you need. The fact is, you are capable of so much more than you have accomplished so far and you won't know how much more until you are pushed. It's time to make a serious effort; it's time to show the world that you are more than just a pretty face. You also have fabulous legs.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21): Everyone was born with some kind of talent, and whatever your particular gift may be, try to put it to good use this weekend. If an opportunity arises in your work or career, grab it with both hands. And then saute like you've never sauted before!
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19): Don't let people walk all over you. If they get away with it once, they'll try to do it again. Your back is so comfy and soft on the feet.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18): You may be somewhat anxious today. You just know something bad is going to happen. The only trouble with thinking that way is that it almost guarantees something bad will happen. A positive attitude will solve most problems... but not the one slowly creeping up behind you.
PISCES (Feb 19 - Mar 20): You may be feeling rather sorry for yourself, especially if you think that someone you love has rejected you for no good reason. Most likely, this is untrue, but you won't believe that until the full moon begins to wane. Then you'll realize they have an EXCELLENT reason.
