BeOS Release 4.5
BeOS is the world's first operating system designed for broadband digital
media, designed to offer unsurpassed performance for editing high-bandwidth
digital media such as audio and video.
With Release 4.5, we have extended
BeOS support of standards in virtually every area, making it the most
comfortable and compatible version of BeOS yet. At the same time, we have
continued to improve our acclaimed performance to ensure that BeOS remains
the fastest operating system for media available today.
BeOS now supports a wider variety of media file formats (QuickTime, AVI),
audio file formats (WAV, AIFF, AU), video compression standards (MPEG-1,
Indeo 5, Cinepak, et. al.) and other digital media standards. BeOS makes it
possible for any application to easily make use of such standards, so BeOS
co-exists with other operating systems more seamlessly than ever.
We have included a number of new applications with Release 4.5, including
an all-in-one MediaPlayer application, a TV viewer application, a Webcam
application, a SoundRecorder application and software to access a variety
of digital cameras. We have also included a limited edition of our new
3DSound application, a program that enables users to mix and record
multiple streams of audio using a three-dimensional soundstage metaphor.
Release 4.5 includes a new version of NetPositive, our Web browser
optimized for BeOS. Besides making NetPositive compatible with many more
Websites than ever before, we have also included Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
encryption, enabling BeOS users to conduct secure e-commerce over the Web.
We have also included an experimental version of JavaScript support for
NetPositive.
BeOS now supports two important hardware standards. The first, Universal
Serial Bus (USB), is a rapidly emerging standard for supporting slow-speed
peripherals on PCs. Release 4.5 users can now make use of their USB
keyboards, mice and printers. The second, PCMCIA, is a well-established
standard for enabling notebook computer users to add hardware to their
systems. Release 4.5 supports certain PCMCIA-based Ethernet adapters and
modems.
BeOS Release 4.5 offers fast and easy installation, a consistent and
familiar user interface, high performance for broadband digital media and
support for a wide variety of industry standards. If you're ready for
serious media editing, Release 4.5 is ready for you.
