  Pixel Pushing 101

Welcome to the Be User Experience Group Design Quiz. The exercises below are eerily similar to the day-to-day assignments that we encounter in the trenches. Take your time, but don't obsess - we'll get the idea =)
  1. Design a 32 x 32 pixel icon for a generic MPEG video file. If you like, do it in the classic BeOS isometric style.

  2. Take a look at www.yahoo.com. Yahoo is famous for stark, fast-loading pages, but somewhat lacking in aesthetic sensitivity. Conceptually redesign their front page, addressing information design and aesthetic issues. Present an annotated sketch or a paragraph hilighting small changes that would make a big difference.

  3. BeIA is unique in that its browser interface is completely customizable - every element on screen is rendered in HTML, Javascript and/or Flash. Design a navigation bar for this web browser using the aforementioned tools, and present it as either an HTML file optimized for the browser of your choice (Netscape, IE, whatever) or a Photoshop mockup. Some specs:
    a. Width should allow for variation between 600 and 800 pixels.

    b. Height can be anything up to and including 100 pixels.

    c. Include controls for Back, Forward, Reload, and Home, and leave a space for a URL field.

    d. This browser has no menu bar, but should provide access to a user's preference settings and bookmarks. Provide a way to get to them from the toolbar.
