Is there a way to kill or "force quit" an application?

Yes. To kill an application (because it has crashed or is otherwise unresponsive, or even if you're just feeling evil), Command(Alt)-Option(Windows)-click on the name of the program in the Deskbar. This is an unfriendly way of getting rid of applications, and can leave data files unfinished, so it's not the preferred method of quitting programs. But, use the big guns when they're called for.

A more Windows-centric version is to press Control-Alt-Delete (use Command-Option-forward delete on a Mac) once. This brings up the Team Monitor. Select the team to kill (misbehaving teams are listed in red) and click Kill.
