BeOS Updates
The current major version of BeOS for all supported platforms is BeOS
5. If you are using any previous release of the BeOS, you should upgrade to BeOS 5.
Security Update - posted August 4, 2000
We have discovered a security problem in BeOS 5. If you are running BeOS 5
with the FTP server capability turned on there are some circumstances under
which people can access that server without a password. There are two ways
to fix the problem:
- Turn off the FTP server in the Network Preferences panel.
or
- Download & install the 5.0.3 update. The file locations are:
Personal Edition:
ftp://ftp.be.com/pub/beos_updates/r5.0/personal_edition/BeOS-5.0.3-PersonalEd-x86-Update.zip (251KB)
Pro Edition:
http://www.gobe.com/beos_updates/BeOS5-5.0.2-to-5.0.3-x86.zip (254KB)
http://www.gobe.com/beos_updates/BeOS5-5.0.1-to-5.0.3-PPC.zip (111KB)
Note - The early "release candidate" version of libroot posted on Friday, August 4th, is now considered to be the final version. These Updates will also change the About box to show the correct version.
Installation Instructions: Download the appropriate file and place it in the /boot/
directory (drop it on the hard drive volume but not into any of the
folders.) Unzipping (double-click it) it will install the file in the
correct folder. (The correct folder is /boot/beos/system/lib/).
After installing this file, restart networking via the Network Preferences panel. With this Update you do not need to turn off the FTP server as described in solution #1.
The latest update for BeOS 5 is BeOS 5.0.3
Updates to Obsolete and Unsupported Software
Although we no longer provide full support for previous releases of
BeOS, as a convenience for our customers, here are updates to obsolete
versions of BeOS:
BeOS Release 4.5 System Updates
BeOS 4.5 Update 2
BeOS Release 4.5.2 is an update to BeOS Release 4.5 (and BeOS 4.5.1). In
addition to a number of bug fixes, this update contains a driver for the
3Com 3c905C network card, a driver for the EMU APS/10K1 audio processor
chip, and support for Adaptec's 7890 Ultra2 SCSI controller.

- BeOS Release 4.5.2 Update for PowerPC Architecture [3.9 megs]
- Note: If you can't install BeOS
R4.5 from your BeOS R4.5 CD because you need the Ultra2Wide SCSI support in
BeOS R4.5.2, you need to download the BeOS R4.5.2 boot floppy image and
create a BeOS R4.5.2 boot disk. Read the full instructions in this 4.5.2-boot.readme
file.
BeOS Release 3.2 Updater (updates Release 3 or 3.1 to Release 3.2)
To enhance the usability and correct minor bugs, Be has created two
Updates to BeOS Release 3. If you are using BeOS Release 3 or 3.1, you
should update to Release 3.2 (it's free!).
Additional BeOS Release 3.x Hardware Drivers
BeOS Release 3.2 provided support for a modest range of
hardware. Some additional drivers were released online, and can be
found here.
VERY IMPORTANT: The drivers made
available here were considered "pre-release" or "experimental" versions.
They are unsupported drivers for a no-longer supported version of BeOS.
You should exercise caution when installing and using any of these
drivers.
