  Is BeOS a Plug-n-Play OS?

BeOS can read Plug-n-Play information from the cards and BIOS, but is not in the BIOS sense a "Plug-n-Play" OS. We often suggest turning this off in the BIOS, which is why most people are reading this FAQ.

However, what Plug-n-Play is attempting to do is rescue users from having to deal with reconfiguring the OS when the hardware changes. We do this very well, especially with supported hardware. Most hardware changes are completely transparent to the user. Adding a USB mouse is exactly that - plugging it in. No digging around for the CD. Adding a network card involves putting it in the computer, turning it on, and giving it an address. No additional system restarts needed.

Some people argue that we have the better implementation of driver configuration.
