Issue #2 June 30, 2000
Whoa, Nellie!
What's New
For those of you who have been trembling under a rock for the past two weeks
(as I have), the fresh bun news is that BeOS 5 has now been updated to BeOS
5.0.1! Make sure to update your copy and take advantage of all the new
improvements, such as new features and bugfixes on OpenTracker and
OpenDeskbar, new graphics and networks drivers, plus printing, media and
Interface Kit fixes.
The Hidden Question
Congrats to all who correctly answered last week's question, "Who is the
author of 'The BeOS Bible'?" I was simply looking for the answer Scot Hacker,
but some of you also correctly credited Henry Bortman and Chris Herborth as
well. One of you answered Wendy Hall -- hey, thanks! ; )
Unfortunately, we can't send all of you BeOS loot (there were about 80 of
you), as much as we'd like to. Our little hands would simply get too pooped.
So we randomly picked five of you to win smashing, dead-sexy BeOS T-shirts.
And the winners are:
Stefan D. Jaeger, Austria
Susan Ottwell, Israel
Benson Cerbas, Philippines
Tony Mueller, Illinois
Mitchell Taylor, California
The Hidden Question Rules: Somewhere in the newsletter there will be a hidden
trivia question. If you've registered your copy of BeOS 5, send an e-mail to
hidden@be.com with the correct answer (and your name and address, please --
don't worry, I promise you won't get stalked) and you will be entered into a
drawing to win some nifty BeOS swag. PLUS your name will be announced in the
next newsletter as one of the Big Winners.
That is all.
BeOS Window Management
Today we're going to talk about window management within the BeOS.
You may have noticed when you're breezing around in your BeOS that you
eventually find yourself with a screen full of windows. Why, there are so
many windows they're taking on a life of their own! They begin to taunt you,
laughing at all of your inadequacies, making you feel like the gritty
bubblegum stuck to the bottom of some jogger's filthy, sweaty running shoe!
You try to ignore them, but they grow louder and more insistent, telling you
to do things you don't want to do, giving away your deepest, darkest secrets,
forcing you to the brink of insanity with the noise, noise, noise!
Where was I? Oh yes, the windows. Okay, so you're screen's a mess with
NetPositive windows, a couple of Tracker windows, an e-mail message or two
and a couple of files open in StyledEdit. What you may not know is that all
open applications are listed in the Deskbar (upper right hand corner of your
screen), and every open window is listed in a submenu under the application
that owns it.
So if you go to the Deskbar, there will be a list of the applications that
are currently open. Click an application and a submenu will pop up listing
the files that are open in the application (plus "Hide All," "Show All," or
"Close All" options). When you pick a file, say, http://www.be.com, which
would be under NetPositive, that window will come to the front of the screen.
You can also, of course, hide, show, or close all of an application's
windows, natch. And if you're a sucker for shortcuts, here some good ones:
Right-clicking a window's title bar (that strip of bright yellow at the top)
sends it to the back of all the open windows. This is mighty useful for
cycling through your open windows.
Double-clicking a window's title bar (yellow strip) hides it (so you will
have to go back to the Deskbar to make it pop up again). This lets you hide a
single window, rather than all of an application's windows. According to
BeDope, what day did President Clinton declare an emergency
holiday?
Double-clicking a window's title bar (yellow) and holding down the "Option"
button will minimize ALL windows of that application. Sweet.
You can also simply toggle between workspaces to keep a handle on too many
windows. If you don't know what the heck a workspace is, go here, where there's good info on
workspaces.
Now, don't you feel so much better?
Check it Out
This week, we recommend you check out le Buzz.
"le Buzz was started in February of 1999 to cover the Be Operating System as
a platform on which to do professional audio work. Since then, we have been
reporting the news on a daily basis, covering every nuance of BeOS audio.
Over time, our focus has broadened to include coverage of all high bandwidth
professional media, including video, television, and 3D/animation."
P.S. They've got daily news, contact info of media pros and musicians who use
Be, a mailing list, a bulletin board and an upcoming contest to win goodies.
Horoscopes
ARIES (March 21 - April 19): Flaunt your abilities this week; do something
that makes the world sit up and take notice. It does not matter what it is,
so long as it gets people talking. Especially that neighbor of yours. She
thinks she's so big.
TAURUS (April 20 - May 20): Your friends will want you to do one thing soon
and your family will want you to do something different. Whom do you favor?
There is no easy answer, but the planets indicate that your friends
will be very important to you in the next couple of weeks. You cannot afford
to lose them. Your family, on the other hand, is clearly dispensable. Family
values, my aunt Fanny!
GEMINI (May 21 - June 21): It would be better if you kept personal
information to yourself these days. You may be tempted to bare your soul and
have done with it, but the planets warn that your confession will not be well
received. That unexplained rash is best left to a professional, really.
CANCER (June 22 - July 22): Don't ask too many questions in the coming weeks,
because you might just hear something you don't like. If a partner or loved
one is keeping something from you, there is probably a very good reason.
After all, why confront your problems when denial is so much easier in the
short run? The truth is bad. Very, very bad.
LEO (July 23 - Aug 22): The only danger today, and for the rest of the week,
is that you will waste money on things you don't need. It may not seem
wasteful at the time, but with hindsight, you will see that the money could
have been spent on something more useful. Like soda pop, pretzels, popcorn,
cookies and delicious candy. Pass it here.
VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sept 22): You will be kind to someone who does not deserve it
this week, and it is unlikely you will get much thanks. But that's okay,
because you are not really doing it for anyone else; you are doing it for
yourself, and showing someone in authority what a nice person you are. Okay,
so you're really doing it to show off, but is that so wrong? I mean, you
deserve a little credit for being the good person you are! You're ALWAYS
doing good things and does anyone notice? No! That's thanks for you. Hmph.
LIBRA (Sept 23 - Oct 23): There is something you want to do with your life,
but the only way you can see yourself doing it is if you give up everything
you've been working on and start again from scratch. Don't! You are not
thinking clearly right now. In fact, you are getting sleepy... VERY
sleepy....
SCORPIO (Oct 24 - Nov 21): Planetary activity in your birth sign gives you so
much courage and confidence that you really ought to do something outrageous.
I'm thinking cocktail umbrellas, motor oil and 30 watermelons.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21): It might be smart to get a second opinion,
especially if you find yourself in a minority of one on some contentious
issue. Don't make a fool of yourself. My opinion? You're a fool.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19): Your aim now must be to persuade partners and
colleagues to follow your lead. Bear in mind, however, the word is persuade -
- not force. You know darn well how bad your ankles are.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18): Someone in a position of authority will try to
charm you into doing something that is not in your interest today, and the
moment you agree, you will have no choice but to go through with it. The only
logical course is to say no -- but do it nicely. No using the term "booger-
face."
PISCES (Feb 19 - Mar 20): There is no such thing as a "sure thing," and
provided you remember that right now, you should be okay. Just don't leave
the house, or let anyone into the house. Check the house thoroughly, too. Did
you hear something?
